We all are in digital age and in this age, when the written communication is increasingly done through tabs, laptops and mobile phones, pen-man-ship is on a decline. Nowadays children get exposed to keyboards, touchpads and swipe buttons even before they are introduced to chalk, paper and pencil. why we should ignore the importance of teaching effective handwriting skills to our students. Let us not ignore and try to implement multiple approaches to build good handwriting techniques among students of all age group.
As a parent and Teacher what we can do at pre-school level to enhance handwriting skills.
Strategies to improve the handwriting of preschoolers:
Work on hand-eye coordination & visual-motor skills which is vital for neat handwriting, grows out of eye-hand coordination. The eyes and hand should work in close coordination to ensure that the each letter are correctly formed and stay within the margin or a line.
Provide lots of opportunities to trace and draw shapes and simple drawings in early childhood BEFORE letters are introduced. Encourage child for scribbling activities.
Give special task that require slow, controlled movements. For example, squeeze glitter glue over a line, circular strokes to color an image, coloring shapes so on
Exercise activities also helps child to strengthen their fine and gross motor skills, Exercise with shoulder muscles so that the hands and fingers will be able to move more freely and accurately. Like Climbing on playgrounds so on.
Many research, educationist says that writing by hand also activates the parts of the brain that are involved in memory, impulse control, & attention.
Handwriting is more connected to movement of the heart. You can express yourself better by writing not by typing.
